Code P0980 Symptoms, Causes and Solutions.

The OBD-II code P0980 indicates a high voltage condition in the control circuit of shift solenoid “C.”

Code symptoms P0980.

1. Erratic shifting of gears in automatic transmission.
2. Delayed engagement when shifting into gear.
3. Vehicle may remain stuck in a particular gear.
4. Check engine light illuminated on the dashboard.


Causes of the code P0980.

1. Faulty shift solenoid “C”
2. Damaged wiring or connectors in the shift solenoid “C” control circuit
3. Short circuit in the shift solenoid “C” control circuit
4. Corrosion or poor connections in the shift solenoid “C” control circuit
5. Issues with the engine control module (ECM) or transmission control module (TCM) affecting the shift solenoid “C” circuit.


Code Solutions P0980.

1. Inspect the wiring and connectors related to the shift solenoid “C” to check for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair or replace any damaged components as needed.

2. Test the shift solenoid “C” with a multimeter to ensure it is functioning properly. Replace the solenoid if it is found to be faulty.

3. Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Low or dirty transmission fluid can cause shift solenoid issues. Top up or replace the fluid as necessary.

4. Clear the trouble codes in the vehicle’s computer system using a scan tool. Drive the vehicle and monitor if the P0980 code returns. If it does, further diagnosis may be needed.

5. Reset the transmission control module by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes and then reconnecting it. This may help in clearing any temporary issues causing the high shift solenoid “C” control circuit code.
