Code P0505 Symptoms, Causes and Solutions.

The P0505 trouble code indicates a malfunction in the idle control system. This system is responsible for regulating the engine idle speed, ensuring smooth operation when the vehicle is stationary.


Idle Control System Malfunction

Code symptoms P0505.

1. Engine idling erratically, either too high or too low.
2. Stalling when the vehicle is at a stop.
3. Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminated on the dashboard.
4. Difficulty starting the engine.
5. Poor fuel economy.
6. Rough engine operation.


This code is common in brands such as:: Chevrolet, Renault, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes Benz, Honda.

Causes of the code P0505.

1. Dirty or faulty idle air control valve (IACV).
2. Vacuum leaks in the intake manifold or vacuum hoses.
3. Throttle body malfunction or carbon buildup.
4. Faulty idle speed control motor or wiring or connectors related to the idle control system.
5. Malfunctioning Engine Control Module (ECM).


Code Solutions P0505.

1. Use a diagnostic scanner to retrieve the trouble code and verify the issue.
2. Inspect and clean the idle air control valve (IACV). If cleaning doesn’t solve the problem, consider replacing it.
3. Check for vacuum leaks in the intake manifold and hoses. Repair or replace any damaged components.
4. Inspect the throttle body for dirt, carbon buildup, or malfunctions. Clean the throttle body and throttle plate if necessary. Replace the throttle body if it’s damaged or faulty.
5. Test the idle speed control motor and related wiring or connectors for proper operation. Replace any defective components.
6. Clear the trouble code and perform a test drive to see if the issue persists. If the problem continues, further diagnosis may be required, and consulting a qualified mechanic is recommended. They can perform advanced tests and inspections to identify the root cause of the idle control system malfunction.
