Code P0488 Symptoms, Causes and Solutions.

The P0488 trouble code indicates a range or performance issue with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) throttle control circuit “A.” This circuit is responsible for controlling the operation of the EGR throttle, which regulates the flow of exhaust gases into the intake manifold to reduce emissions.

Code symptoms P0488.

1. Illumination of the “Check Engine” or “Service Engine Soon” light on the dashboard.
2. Reduced engine performance.
3. Rough idling or stalling.
4. Engine knocking or pinging.
5. Decreased fuel efficiency.


This code is common in brands such as:: Chevrolet, Renault, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes Benz, Honda.

Causes of the code P0488.

1. Carbon buildup or debris obstructing the EGR throttle mechanism.
2. Faulty EGR throttle control solenoid.
3. Open or shorted wiring in the EGR throttle control circuit “A.”
4. Corrosion or poor electrical connections in the EGR throttle control circuit “A.”
5. Malfunctioning EGR valve.


Code Solutions P0488.

1. Clean any carbon buildup or debris from the EGR throttle mechanism to ensure proper operation.
2. Test the EGR throttle control solenoid to ensure it is functioning correctly. Replace the solenoid if it is faulty.
3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors associated with the EGR throttle control circuit “A” for signs of damage or corrosion. Replace or repair damaged components as necessary.
4. Check for corrosion or poor electrical connections in the EGR throttle control circuit “A” and repair as needed.
5. Test the EGR valve for proper operation. Replace the EGR valve if it is malfunctioning.
6. Clear the trouble codes and perform a test drive to verify that the issue has been resolved.
