The P0501 trouble code indicates a range or performance issue with the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) “A.” The VSS is responsible for monitoring the speed of the vehicle and sending this information to the engine control module (ECM) or transmission control module (TCM). The ECM or TCM uses this data for various functions, including fuel injection, transmission shifting, and speedometer operation.

1. Illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or check engine light on the dashboard.
